"Care for pregnant women with high BMI"

About: Royal Bolton Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

I had a knee injury which imobilised me for over a year. Just when I was starting to mobilised I felt pregnant. My midwife refer me to see the consultant in RBH as during the time of injury I had put on weight and at time of pregnancy my BMI was just over 36.

I saw the consultant when I was 12 weeks was given vitamins & aspirin. I then saw the consultant after the scans. Only advice given was to continue with prescription. After my 36 week scan I was weight for the first time since my refer. The consultant then informed me that I had put on too much weight. More than expected. I had put on the same weight I had put on on my previous pregnancy. So was surprised to hear the view that it was too much. The consultant also told me that I was like all the girls on the street, overweight. Told me that once the baby was here I was not going to have time to loose the weight. She asked if I heard of slimming world. I am still in shock that the consultant waited till I was 38 weeks to give me her words of wisdom. They should have inform me at 12 weeks about the expected weight gain in my situation. I should have weight more often so there was a proper control. I feel the service does not put the patient at the center of their care. It felt more like a ticking exercise. With the consultant given me her personal opinion " you wouldn't have the time after the baby comes" of course they never took a history to understand the my previous pregnancy I had lost all the weight and more.

They should concentrate on facts and supporting expectant mothers during their time under their care.
