"my father is a person not just an ailment or a body part"

About: Castle Hill Hospital / Medical oncology

(as a relative),

My elderly father was seen for his long over due cancer check up this week ( last seen at the beginning of this year ). The doctor he saw was only interested in the body part that my fathers cancer was diagnosed in & the tumour markers related to this. My father has some physical pain & concerns that his own GP was confident the specialist would be assessing at his review. The appointment lasted approximately 5 minutes as my father had no opportunity to discuss any of his pain or concerns & was told by the doctor he saw that he should see his GP as the doctor was a doctor of that speciality only ( I was with my father & I don't want to disclose the speciality for privacy reasons). I was speechless at the lack of compassion & holistic approach to his care. The sad thing is the doctor had a medical student with him too. If that is what they are teaching the doctors of the future, it makes me sad as my father is more than a cancer patient. He is a man who worked hard all his life, raised a family & never complains. He doesn't attend doctors or hospitals unnecessarily which is probably why his cancer was so advanced when it was diagnosed. Now when he needs support he is dismissed in an undignified way, possibly because he is elderly. It has really upset me how he was dismissed in that way to the point where I felt I needed to share my experience.
