"A&E Department - Rude, Unorganised and Unsafe"

About: Colchester General Hospital

I was in the department with my partner. During the hours that we were kept waiting in majors without a single person coming near us to explain what was happening with his care i overheard doctors and nurses laughing and sharing the details of another patient who had attended with a mental health concern. My partner was sent was a chest x-ray and whilst out the department his bed was used and when he returned from the x-ray there was nowhere to put him. Staff thought this was funny. Drugs were administered without checking his identity. Staff were unaware of clinical guidelines relating to my partner's condition. staff did not assess him based on any of the information that was provided to them. staff were dismissive and rude. after i left the department i was advised that he had been admitted when i phoned to check on him. I was passed about numerous departments on the phone only to find out later that he had been discharged hours earlier without anyone checking that he had the ability to get home safely. he was later found by police as he had not managed to get from the hospital home which should have been foreseen given his condition. partner now too scared to return to colchester general for medical help which is urgently required and staff were so rude, unknowledgeable and unhelpful that he fears for his life there.

I apologise you’ve not had a good patient experience. We try really hard to improve our services based on the comments we receive from our patients, their relatives or carers. We would like the opportunity to discuss your experiences more fully and to apologise in person. If you are willing I would appreciate it if I could ask the matron to contact you. Could you email me, using the reference “Comment on Accident and emergency services at RDEE4-Colchester General Hospital at 05/11/2014 04:18:06”, please? Many thanks Paul Searle, Head of Communications Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust info@colchesterhospital.nhs.uk
