"Great staff some system improvement required"

About: Bradford Royal Infirmary

Pre-assessment : Arrived slightly stressed as a first timer for any operation. You don't realize how big BRI is until you have to trek from one end to another for different tests but all went well and little or no waiting. But! It later transpires that between these tests and admission my E.C.G. is lost. 4 days, not a good start. I'm being generous 3 stars out of 5 Admission : I arrived at Ward 18 for an early operation (7:30am) and was promptly attended by the anaesthetist and surgeon which was good as I was extremely anxious and it would be over quickly. The O.R. staff and I were then unbelievebly frustrated and delayed by the discovery of the previously mentioned loss of and then slow replacement of the E.C.G.. Apart from this the staff on ward 18 were very good. Professional and friendly. A creditable 4 stars. Pre-op : Special mention here for anaesthetist assisted by the O.D.P. who took an extremely stressed and anxious patient calmly through procedures and helped ease the tension. I could not have been in better hands, fabulous bedside manner. An excellent and very well deserved 5 stars. Recovery : Returned to ward 18. A different shift of nurses this time. Came round enough to have good chili con carne (though it did make my temperature go up for next round of obs.). Nursing and ancillary staff were just as friendly and efficient, especially attentive to the more infirm or long stay patients. I hope you all have long careers to benefit as many as possible. Well done. A credit to your profession 5 stars. Discharge : Discharge delayed waiting for prescription. With the amount of delay I thought I was going to get a large bag of drugs that had to be brought in, but it turned out to be one single tiny bottle of eye drops from the pharmacy directly under the ward. Oh well at least I got an extra meal. Lamb casserole. Great. Could be slicker 4 stars. Aftercare advice : Not a lot of info provided other than drop frequency. No one explained how gunged up my eye would get with two hourly interval drops and no instruction on how best to keep it clean (no water allowed, this from internet, not told). Outpatients eventually gave phone advice (after being one of several departments called). More info required 3.5 stars.
