"waiting for appointments"

About: University Hospital Monklands

(as the patient),

I went to my GP with a painful lump and was referred for an ultrasound. After two months of waiting I eventually had my scan and was told I have a tumour which they believe to be benign but would require a consultant to deal with it as the GP ‘did not know’ how they get treated. 3 months later I received an appointment with a consultant only for this to be cancelled and rescheduled for a further three weeks down the line (causing me to reschedule time taken off work which had been arranged for the appointment). The consultant has referred me for a CT scan, within days I received a letter from Radiology dept saying I has to get a blood test within 10 days or they would cancel the referral, I had the test within 2 days.

I then received a letter scheduling an appointment with the consultant to get the results of the scan but have not received an appointment for the scan. Upon phoning the consultant’s secretary I was informed that the scan is still listed as pending as Radiology have yet to assign me an appointment, 5 weeks later. With less than a month until I am due to get the results, this does not leave much time for NHS Lanarkshire to schedule the scan with the appropriate 7 days notice as per their guidelines and have the results ready in time for my follow up appointment. Thus I fear that this will once again end up having to be rescheduled, leading to more disturbances with my work as I have arranged the time off for this appointment.

I have been in daily pain for months and 6 months after initially seeing my GP about this problem, I am still looking for answers.

Can someone please tell me how long I should have to wait from a consultant’s referral to getting a CT scan and how they can schedule results appointments with no idea of when the scan will eventually take place?

Dear 1989

I was concerned to read about the delays you have experienced since your GP referred you to Monklands Hospital and the issues you have had accessing CT scanning. I would be grateful for the opportunity to investigate this further on your behalf. If you would be happy for me to do this please contact our Patient Affairs Team on Tel: 01236 713065.
