"Worried about poor hygiene standards"

About: Merseycare Julie Ann Ltd Services

(as a staff member posting for a carer/relative),

My huband was discharged from hospital after quite a long stay. He was given a short term care package but after only one visit I had to stop it because I was so worried about the poor hygiene standards.

My husband is in very poor health and very vulnerable to opportunistic infections so our whole family and all visitors to the house are very conscious of hygiene. I was shocked that the carer who came out was not going to wash their hands, had no apron or overall. Although they had gloves with them, these had been stored in a coat pocket and were got out with unwashed hands. I didn't think this was hygienic enough given my husband's vulnerable health condition.

I do not blame the carer but I do think that the agency need to train and equip their staff much better. I told the agency that I didn't want them to come back. The agency still kept calling for weeks and didn't seem to be listening to me. I have been put off ever allowing home care services in ever again.

I am so sorry to hear about your experience of our service and your decision to cancel after just one visit. I was really concerned to hear about the hygiene practices of our care worker.

It is our duty to provide care in a way that gives our service users confidence and protects them from risk of infection and good hygiene practices are vitally important for all staff. We provide gloves and aprons to all staff and they receive training on infection control & health and safety.

We are keen to improve our service for the benefit the people we care for. Therefore I would like to offer you the opportunity to discuss yours and your husband’s experience with me on 0151 726 8060 or rosierobinson@mcja.co.uk.

Kind regards,
