"Lumber puncture"

About: Sunderland Royal Hospital

When I arrived for my lumber puncture the member of staff who carried out my procedure, met me to talk through what was going to happen, to tell me that I was getting an anaesthetic and that she uses the smallest of needles. They made me feel at ease before entering the treatment room. I was given an anaesthetic by injection in to my back I was told this would not remove all of the pain but blunt it considerably. Once the procedure started I just felt movement in my back, which was not painful, the procedure took around ten minutes to complete. As they were carrying out the procedure they told me what they were going to do before they did it so I didn't get a shock when I felt a change. After the procedure the aftercare was explained to me and then I was left in the treatment room to lie down for a while, family were allowed to come and sit with me. Staff kept coming to check I was okay or if I needed anything. Upon leaving the hospital the member of staff who carried out my procedure told me she would ring me to check in with me 48hours later to see how I am doing. I am extremely satisfied with how I was treat at Sunderland royal hospital. All staff I came across where kind and very helpful.
