"lack of dignity for another patient"

About: The Royal Victoria Infirmary

I brought my father in on 21st to A and E by ambulance. I was in the waiting room for 7 hours as I didn't want to leave my mother without support. During the evening a male nurse called a young patient into the triage room. After the assessment he walked the patient out into the waiting room where he began to discuss the patients existing methadone programme. My partner and I were astounded that something as sensitive as this could be discussed within hearing shot of us despite being in the back row seating. I have no doubt that the staff were extremely busy and working hard but I believe that this was embarrassing for us but more so the patient.

Thank you for your feedback on your recent experience at our Emergency Services Department. We apologise for any embarrassment caused by the conversation overheard in the waiting area and as you rightly state, this conversation should have been undertaken in the triage room. Maintaining the privacy and dignity of patients is of paramount importance to us and regrettably was not observed on this occasion. May we assure you that staff have been made aware of your comments and reminded of the importance of discretion when discussing patient information.
