"My stay in Harvey Ward"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - City Campus / Breast surgery

(as the patient),

I was initially admitted by my GP to Harvey ward at Nottingham City Hospital. The ward was very busy and had to wait 8 hours in the day room before a bed was found. The ward staff was really busy but I did not think it ideal to be given antibiotics in the day room with other patients and visitors close around. The following day I walked to the breast unit where I had a very painful procedure four hours after the last pain killers. It would have been helpful to have been offered some PRW medication for pain beforehand. I wasn’t on the ward for lunch time, medication was delayed and I had to ask twice before painkillers were given. I was not given antibiotics at this point either. I was then discharged at tea time with antibiotics and was given an appointment for the breast clinic. The breast clinic arranged for me to be readmitted to the Gullies Ward for 48hours of antibiotics. The ward was very busy but the care was excellent though sleeping was difficult because antibiotics were given until 1.00am and then at 6.00am. After two days I was allowed to leave with medication. The staff was very good but they were so overworked it would have been better if they had been more of them.
