"Early pregnancy unit"

About: The Royal Victoria Infirmary

After being referred for a ultra sound scan after heavy bleeding I was anxious, nervous and emotional. My first meeting with a member of staff involved me being told that I needed to provide a vaginal swab for two sexually transmitted diseases. Having been with my husband several years and had two previous pregnancies to him (which are on record at the RVI) I felt this was unnecessary at this time. I understand that this may be trust policy but I do feel some discretion should be shown it added to the stress and made me feel even more uncomfortable. As did the statement "you know it's a vaginal scan -Don't you!" I may add that the nurse was sensitive and caring in fact the complete opposite to the health care assistant. I really feel that women in the position of having a miscarriage deserve a little more understanding.

Thank you for taking the time to give feedback about your experience of the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit. We are very sorry to hear how unhappy you felt in being offered routine screening and we do try to explain the scanning procedure as sensitively as is possible in the circumstances. We understand the significant distress a visit to our clinic causes and we have tried to support rapid access into this clinic by offering weekend services .Our members of staff endeavour to be sensitive to our patients needs and allow flexibility to accommodate our patients. The nurse practitioners and health care assistants pride themselves in offering the best support they can in what is often an emotional environment and we are pleased that you experienced this from the nurse you had contact with, however we are sorry that you felt the health care assistant did not afford you the same support. We would like to invite you to contact our Matron Angela Barnes on 0191 2820527 who would happily discuss your concerns further should you wish.
