My sister gave birth at Queen Charlotte's on the 21st October. I had a call from her in tears with the treatment she had received. I am sure she will make her complaints here. My complaint is for what I saw on my visit yesterday 22nd October. I found her with bottles Aptamil and trying to feed her baby. I asked why she was not breast feeding and she told me the baby was not latching on to her breast. I asked if a nurse had assisted her and she said no. She simply notified a nurse that the baby wasn't feeding and the nurse got her bottles of Aptamil. I was absolutely shocked to hear this. Which nurse would give a baby less than 24hrs old Aptamil without providing assistance to a first time mum to feed from the breast? I immediately called the nurse and told them to help her to get the baby latched on. The nurse was helpful and within 5 minutes of trying the baby finally latched on. Needless to say I stayed with my sister for a further hour and a half and requested assistance from the nurse again to help teach her how to breast feed. Why did it take a request from me before a nurse showed a new mum how to feed a baby? New mothers having feeding trouble should NOT be handed bottles of formula without repeated attempts of help from nurses to get babies to feed from the breast.
