"Good care for my learning disabled sister at Ormskirk"

About: Ormskirk & District General Hospital

(as a relative),

Last week I attended Ormskirk District General Hospital with my sister who has profound learning disabilities.

Whilst her treatment had taken a few years, possibly 10 years, to arrange she was treated very kindly and hopefully successfully. Her disability has meant that she can't have a blood test, dental treatment, foot care or even an examination of any sort without being anaesthetised.

There had been a suspicion of thyroid problems. Her feet were a mess and she has some very funny looking moles on her back similar to ones which other family members had in the past had removed as a precaution.

Mrs Kewley the community dentist at Ormskirk arranged for the very skillful Dr Path to "put my sister under" whilst her various issues were dealt with by a succession of dentist (Mrs Kewley herself), podiatrist, phlebotomist and dermatologist.

All staff, incuding nurses and receptionists, treated my sister and the accompanying carer and family members with dignity and respect at all times, with a nice drink and some food for the patient when she came round. Thanks to everybody concerned.

I have posted this to add to the recent debate about NHS treatment for people with learning disabilities.

Dear Griff,

Thank you for taking the time to post your kind comments about the care your sister received recently at Ormskirk.

I am glad to hear that she has finally been able to be seen by all those who needed to see her and I hope she is well.

I will make sure Mrs Kewley is made aware of your comments.
