"Great care when having an MRI scan done"

About: Victoria Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Had to attend for an MRI Scan of my neck as I have been having the worst pain in my life affecting my shoulder/arm. I have had many health problems and conditions causing pain but the pain I have been experiencing over the last months is 10 out of 10.

After waiting months to see an Orthopaedic surgeon this MRI scan was arranged. I was apprehensive as there are many stories of people my sister included of not being able to go through with it. I need not have worried the staff were excellent in particular Debbie who chatted to me before it putting me completely at ease. I was helped onto the table by caring staff and everything explained and even given some Rod Stewart to listen to! I am praying this scan shows why I am in so much pain and I hope I don't have to wait months for the result however once again the staff in the Vic have been superb-thank you.

Dear Granny

I am sorry for the delay in acknowledging your post, we are having some technical issues a this end which is frustrating; however we are working today so it's great to be able to make contact with you at last!

I was really sorry to hear about your pain - it is hard to imagine how people cope with pain so intense and brings home for me the importance of remembering that behind every patient there is a person with a story. Already I know a little more about you having shared your interest in music (good choice - "I am sailing" is my favourite). It is so important that we find meaningful ways to help relax people in the healthcare setting and it sounds like Debbie's caring approach with the addition of music really helped to alleviate your anxiety. I will make sure Debbie and the team are made aware of your story, which will go a long way to reminding staff that little things make a big difference.

I do hope you get to the route of the problem. Many thanks for sharing your feedback on Patient Opinion.

Regards

Louise Ewing

Update posted by Granny (the patient)

Thank you Louise for your response to my story. Most of my care from NHS has been excellent only on two occasions have I felt let down but the many many good healthcare workers have made up for this.

Unfortunately I am still in severe pain in my right arm/shoulder. I had a childhood illness that resulted in paralysis of my left arm and shoulderI have never been able to lift or straighten it so you can imagine how this is affecting my life. It is now over 2 weeks since I had my scan and was told the results would be with the Consultant within a week so hopefully I will hear soon and just hope something can be done to help me.
