It was 7am on the 16th October 2014 and I was feeling tense and uneasy as I entered Homerton University Hospital for my appointment. And although my forthcoming Local Anaesthetic & Steroid injection into my painful hip would be a brief first step procedure, my anxiety, and blood pressure was steadily rising. I of course knew what was triggering this state of mind. And although aged 67, remnants from an abusive childhood had left me with a cynical disposition, reluctant to relinquish control. Therefore, placing trust in complete strangers was never going to be an easy one for me to overcome. However, I need not have worried. Within minutes of entering the Orthopaedics Surgical Centre, I was greeted with genuine warmth and smiling faces from the Staff Nurse and nurses who all treated me with respect and dignity and catered for my every need. What I found most striking was no matter whom I met; receptionist, consultant, anaesthetist, or theatre nurses, the level of professionalism, care, and empathy never faltered and remained continuous throughout. Having a voice and being treated fairly means a lot to me…That I matter! Therefore, first impressions count. And I soon found my tension and fears easing, particularly having my queries listened to and politely answered in a patient and jargon-free manner. Following my procedure and returned to the ward, I was greeted with ready smiles and choices of tea, coffee, and sandwiches. The likelihood of returning to this excellent hospital for a hip replacement is in the offing. However, having experienced such warmth and high level of care and support, the thought no longer worries me. Full marks for an excellent service to all the hospital staff that looked after me. Well Done!
