"Angels at Rosie Delivery Unit"

On October 14, at 4PM, two angel Midwifes came to bed A of the Induction Suite of Sara Ward to fetch my wife Silvia and take her to Room 9 of the Delivery Unit. A big smile on her faces, the reassuring words of trusted friends who are going to spend with and take you through some of the most amazing and beautiful hours of your life. Labour for Silvia started at around 06.30PM, after waters were broken, and from that moment until shift change one of the midwives did not leave us for a second. The midwife smiled when they waved good bye, almost sorry that they had to go and not able to welcome our baby boy Carlo to the world. It was difficult to match the midwife's professionalism, care and compassion, but then another angel appeared. With nearly 30 years of experience in helping mums to deliver babies, the midwife's knowledge and skills were impressive. But it was her human qualities which stroke us most. When Silvia was finally able to hug her new born baby (at 01.14AM, October 15) she said that the midwife is Carlo’s second mum, and she really felt it. We saw several other angels discretely coming and going through the night, hugging the baby, congratulating us, making us feel part of that large family of doctors, midwives and nurses which work relentlessly day and night to make this once in a life moment an even more unforgettable one. On day we will tell Carlo what lucky introduction to life he had and will take him to the Delivery Unit, to say thank you in person to all of you.
