"Appalling care for miscarriage at Princess of Wales Hospital Trust, Bridgend"

I write on behalf of a friend who received appalling care when she suffered a miscarriage.

She was 8 weeks pregnant when she rang ward 11 at Princess of Wales Hospital because she had started to lose blood on the Friday. She was told that "there were no beds available and either to go to casualty but that wouldn't help because they would not give a scan".

By Sunday the bleeding had worsened so they rang PrimeCare at 8.30pm on Sunday, they were seen by the out-of-hours Doctor at 9pm on Sunday, he pushed her stomach and she was told "if the bleeding gets worse, come back" and added, "because you've got a scan booked for Tuesday wait for that."

She attended for the scan on the following Tuesday and was told that there was no heartbeat, come back in a week - and was sent home. That evening she went to the toilet and the fetal sack came away from her, they phoned ward 11 again, only to be told to hang on till 8.30 the following morning, they rang the next morning and were told they couldn't be seen till Thursday at 9am.

They were told to keep the fetus, not advised how or where to keep "it", and to bring "it" with them. This is a young couple who had to stay in their home with a dead child, because that is what this was, their child, they spent all of the next day out of the house, when she should have been resting, because they couldn't face going home as they had placed their child in the fridge.

What kind of Health Service allows this type of negligence to occur?
