"Misuse of the TV on Porchester Ward"

About: Forensic mental health / Low secure services

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

Many times, pornography or rape scenes have been seen on television on the ward during the day and into the night. This was brought forward to the staff and explained in a normal matter and the attention was uncared for. Because the policies are not against pornographic material on television there was compromise expected from patients due to lack of moral standards held amongst staff and patients. The patients are allowed all freedoms of the television in what they are watching yet profanities are not allowed verbally on the ward. This, with the use of graphic sexual conduct is expected to be compromised by everyone's opinions or moral beliefs. Is there any way of going about this differently?

Can there be more choice of what is viewed on the television on the ward?

Patients on Porchester ward currently have access to SKY TV channels. This does not include access to adult or pornographic programming however does include access to Films/ programmes which are rated suitable for 18 years old and over. I think we need to review how freely patients have access to such material in the communal areas in respect of the ward community as a whole.

Please discuss your views with the ward manager so that we fully understand your point of view. This will help us to agree the best solution as a management team.

We are now using the password system which comes with TV subscriptions. This means that we can control what content is shown on the communal TV. This allows us to have discretion on what is appropriate to be shown on the ward at certain times during the day. Thank you for highlighting this issue.
