"I had 2 really sweet midwives ..."

About: Royal Bolton Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

I had 2 really sweet midwives who were so overwhelmingly nice. i wish i knew their names, but i was in such distress i did not take note of them.

What could be improved

i came into womens healthcare for some blood tests because of threatened miscarriage and without even asking my name or anything a man walked in the room and demanded i tell him where i was from and my plans for the future. he judged me because i have an accent. i am an english citizen and he judged me because i lived abroad when i was younger. during this sensitive time of a miscarriage the last thing i expected was someone to badger me about my accent, tell me i was lying, and be so rude. it was a horrible experience. when i was admitted to the hospital i found the care quite better with some very caring staff who were helpful in reducing anxiety. when i went back for another recheck however, the doctor had no idea what she was doing, and in front of me and my husband she said to the nurse "what should we do with the patient in this situation?" i could not believe the doctor was asking the nurse what to do. that made me lose trust in the hospital completely. i remain worried about giving birth there later this year.

Response from Royal Bolton Hospital

was very concerned to hear about this and appreciate how upset you must have been. From what you say, the doctor's attitude was completely unacceptable and I would like to apologise on his behalf for the distress that was caused.

When women attend the clinic all the staff involved -- that is both the nurses and the doctors --- discuss and contribute to the overall plan of care. In theis case the doctor would be asking the nurse for her views on the management of your condition. I am sorry this was not explained to you at the time and you made to feel that the doctor did not know what she was doing.

If you wish to discuss any of this further please contact me, Carole Bullough, Departmental Manager, 01204 390002.

Meanwhile, thank you for your kind comments about the midwives who cared for you.
