Had second mesh tape fitted thinking first one had been removed only to discover it had only been cut therefore I now had two. first one caused many infections cut my husbands penis during intercourse. after 2nd was fitted was sent home with box of catheters told to go to my gp for him to tell me how to use them. done this. gp told me he couldn't as wasn't his job so I would have to go back ask hospital. called hosp was told appointment would be sent. waited 3months for this and this is called patient care I don't think so. have been dismissing pains in my legs and groin for over a year. done another removal pain I originally had has gone however other leg now suffering so 4 surgeries later still no better avoid mesh 100. /' so not worth it

Dear Shadysmum,

I was so sorry to read about the pain, suffering and distress you and your husband have experienced following this treatment. I know that colleagues working in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde will be carefully considering your concerns and how best to respond and offer support to you both in addressing them. I am so sorry that your experience has been such a difficult one.

As you may be aware, an Independent Review of surgery using vaginal mesh has been set up by the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing. This will look at research and also examine adverse incidents and effects associated with this treatment. It will have the means both of identifying and determining the causes of issues where this is possible, and finding and implementing solutions.

An Expert Group, chaired by the Deputy Chief Medical Officer, has also been set up to consider the issue of synthetic mesh implants in more detail. This Group has met three times and has published a patient information and consent leaflet for the surgical treatment of stress urinary incontinence in women. This Booklet gives detailed information about the synthetic mid-urethral tape procedure and discusses the intended benefits and risks associated with the insertion of mesh implants. The booklet can be accessed at:

The Expert Group is currently developing a patient information and consent booklet for treatment of pelvic organ prolapse. New care pathways are also being developed for management of pelvic organ prolapse and for women presenting with complications. Discussions are also beginning in respect of the national planning required to reconfigure services to ensure women have access to appropriate clinical expertise and treatment. Part of the work of the Independent Review is to consider the personal experiences from Scottish women who, like you, have had problems as a result of mesh implants. I appreciate that none of this can change what you have had to go through. I will ask the Deputy Chief Medical Officer to arrange for your posting on Patient Opinion to be passed to the members of her Expert Group and that the Chair of the Independent Review is also advised of the details of your experiences. I am very sorry to hear about your experience and the impact this has had on you. A number of other women have also contacted us detailing their similar experiences and I understand that this matter is currently under review by the Scottish Government. You can also make a complaint directly to the clinical department of the hospital where you have been treated.

Thankyou so much for your kind response to my story I am fully aware of the independent review and all the hard work being done worldwide to help women in the same position as myself I was part of a meeting held today regarding the independant review today in the hope that something can be done to put an end to the suffering so many women are now suffering due to this surgery.

in my opinion it is barbaric what is being done or was being done up until the suspension however it is with great disappointment to hear that clinical trials are now being promoted surely this money would be better spent training someone in removing mesh from the women already crippled by this and alleviating their pain as much as possible rather than ask for more victims for trials no one in their right mind would put themselves in this position had I know then what I do now I would never be in this position.
