"The Staff were very friendly and ..."

About: St Helier Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

The Staff were very friendly and Efficient

What could be improved

Difficult to say as everything looked clean, but my Friend of over 40 years caught MRSA

Anything else?

Though my Friend had a Major Operation and at one stage they thought he might not get through it, he did get better, if very slowly over the couple of months.

He caught the MRSA about a week ago, and Died on Thursday.

No guarantee he would still have survived, but was improving gradually, so getting MRSA did not help his survival.

Just wish Hospitals could not do more to combat MRSA.

I am sorry to hear about the death of your friend recently. At the Trust we have introduced a variety of high profile measures to control and prevent infections like MRSA and C. Difficile, including extending the screening programme so that we can detect and treat infections quicker. We have also recently launched a new campaign, called 'The gloves are off : help us beat infections', to raise awareness of the things patients and their visitors can do to help too. You can find more information on our website (www.epsom-sthelier.nhs.uk)

Figures released earlier this year by the Health Protection Agency show that our MRSA and C. difficile rates dropped by a third and 40% respectively during 2008 (compared to 2007). I hope this information can go some way to reassuring you about how proactive we are being at the Trust with regards to infections.
