"Recent inpatient experience"

About: Stoke Mandeville Hospital

I was admitted at short notice in a planned way via the A&E department for inpatient IV antibiotic therapy. I was processed in an orderly and organised manner and eventually was found a bed on Ward 9, (in the early hours), where I commenced my IV therapy. Through out my stay all staff all disciplines of staff involved me with any decision making in my care and welfare. I was self caring and did not need any direct care from staff but they were always on hand had I required any assistance. I also witnessed plenty of caring interventions from staff toward those patients who were ill or bed bound and relations seemed to be very open between visitors and staff. Any requests I made were always met by staff in a prompt and responsive manner. Generally the ward seemed clean with domestic staff in evidence through out the day but I do wonder how often toilets were cleaned because there did seem some occasions that these had not been cleaned on a daily basis, (I was in one ward bay when this was the case). They were not dirty but you are the only person using them then you can tell when they have been cleaned. The food was OK - I appreciate that the catering is not home made but it was satisfactory, edible and hot. Tea and coffee were on offer throughout the day. I was a bit surprised male and female patients on the same ward but could see these arrangements were confined to individual bays. Signage was evident around the ward - warning about infection control - and I noted the majority of staff wore PPE when carrying out personal care or clinical procedures.
