"Disgraceful, bad reputation is well deserved"

About: St Peter's Hospital (Chertsey)

I visited my friend on holly ward last year. I went with another friend who was visiting from the philipines. She was able to translate what some of th staff were saying about the patients and my friend. I was appalled that they referred to an elderly lady as " the crazy pig" another lady was referred to as the "stinking monkey". shocking. The staff would wonder around the ward aimlessly, giggling between themselves instead of attending to the patients who were clearly in need. They would disappear for ages when asked for help to get my friend to the loo. No one seemed to know what they were doing. Or how to behave properly, none of them were not dressed appropriately for a clinical setting where infection control is vital. Some of the staff had very poor personal hygeine and terrble body odour, the ward smelt like a toilet. How is this hospital still open? How can the hospital management allow this ward to operate so badly? Neither it or the staff are fit for purpose. I wouldn't advise anyone to go there thankfully my friend was discharged early and made a good recovery under the care of st George's hospital.

We are extremely sorry and concerned to read your feedback regarding your friend’s experience on Holly Ward last year. Clearly the behaviour you have described falls very short of the high levels of care we would wish for our patients and which we strive very hard to provide. Our staff all receive regular training on all aspects of providing care – including both communication skills and standards of personal presentation - and are expected to work to high standards at all times. Without knowing the detail of the case in question it’s difficult to comment further, but I can assure you that this behaviour is totally unacceptable and a long way from the norm. Please do not hesitate to contact either our Patient Experience Team on 01932 723553 or our Associate Director of Nursing for Medicine, Justine Hillier, who you can contact via Switchboard on 01932 872000.
