"My Dad collapsed around 9am..."

About: Medway Maritime Hospital

With Medway hospital less than 4 miles away, the ambulance took almost 2 hours to arrive! He was assessed & deemed to go to Acute Medical Unit, but there were no beds on arrival, so he was dumped on a gurney in A&E and completely ignored for 4 hours. Only after my sister kicked off at a passing doctor did he get looked at & moved to a small ward off A&E, and eventually moved off the trolley 6 hours after being dumped on it. 8+ hours after collapsing, still in agony on every cough, no painkillers given, with suspected chest & urine infection. This place really is a joke. It's woefully understaffed, obviously lacking beds & most staff obviously don't have the time to give a monkeys about the patients. When you see how well the Will Adams MC runs, with friendly staff who you can build a relationship with (Dad has had the same professional throughout his current eye treatment!) and feel like they give a damn about getting him sorted. Really makes you wonder why they need massive hospitals at all. They should have loads of smaller medical centres around the place that can perform operations & take care of folk.

I'm sorry to hear about your concerns around your dad's care in the emergency department at Medway Maritime Hospital and for the waits that you encountered. If you or your dad would like to talk through your experiences in more detail with me, I would welcome that discussion. You can contact me on katy.white@medway.nhs.uk and we can arrange a time to talk about what happened. Thank you Katy White Head of Nursing - Emergency Department
