"staffing levels at Cranford Stroke Unit."

About: Kettering General Hospital

In the past I have been a great advocate for the excellent treatment and patient care at Kettering general, having been an in patient on a number of occasions, therefore, it saddens me to have to write such a review on this website. My wife suffered a stroke a few weeks ago and was transferred from Northampton general to the Cranford Stroke Unit, at first we thought this was ideal due to the fine reputation I have given this hospital to friends and family, however, I feel I must bring to the attention of anyone using this website to try and decide the best place for themselves or a loved one to receive treatment, that the staffing levels in my opinion and that of other relatives I have spoken to, are absolutely ridiculous. The hospital state that there should be four nursing staff on duty to care for twelve patients, this is rare, in reality the number actually on duty is three, baring in mind that patients on this ward are stroke victims and the majority have suffered paralysis in one form or another, this is to my mind totally unacceptable. When visiting my wife today, she asked for a bed pan and was told she would have to wait as the staff were too busy, this is by no means the first time this has happened, on more than one occasion my wife has been left for over an hour before someone attended to her, by which time she had wet herself. A big thing is made about patient dignity at this hospital, I wonder where this ward would fare in the government's figures. Absolutely disgusting.

I am really sorry to hear your comments about Cranford Unit and about your wife’s experience. We do constantly review our staffing levels to ensure that these are appropriate and as a result, additional staff were brought on to the ward during this time. Although the ward does care for acutely unwell patients, this is not an excuse for your wife to have been left without a bed pan as you have described. If you would like to talk to us further about your wife’s experience, please contact the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) on 01536 493305 in the first instance.
