"Great experience with ADSU (Hernia repair)"

About: Royal Berkshire Hospital

I went into the ADSU for a Hernia repair on 25th SEptember and have to say that the overall experience from admission to recovery after surgery was great. All the staff made me feel very calm and comfertable for what was my first ever experience of surgery and general anesthetic. I was slightly put off by the large group of patients waiting in the corridor for the units doors to open at 7.15am, but as soon as they opened for business I was immediately put at ease by the very smooth and efficient process of being shown to my bed and briefed on what to do and what was going to happen. The anesthatist was great and everyone else who spoke to me as I went to the anesthetics room was cheerful, reassuring and calm. When I woke up in the recovery room I feel good an didn't have any pain from the operation. One patient was experiencing some discomfort nearby and I was impressed with the way in which all the staff (including surgeon and anesthatist were quickly on the scene to take care of them. My post op experience in the ADSU was also very good and I must make mention of the nurse responsible for my care. She was really great, rushing around to see to everyones needs but still having time to chat and have a joke with us all. All in all a very good experience, which completely changed my previous perceptions of RBH service.

Thank you for posting such positive comments about the service we provide. We are sorry that you experienced some anxiety, when met with a group who were waiting to be admitted into the Day Bed Unit. It is difficult to know how we could manage this any differently, as our patients need to arrive early to ensure they are seen in a timely fashion prior to the theatre lists starting. We try to open promptly but there is often a crowd waiting to be let in when the doors are opened. We will ensure that your comments are passed on to those who were involved in your care; they will be delighted to know that you had such a positive experience with us and that you have taken the time to write. Thank you again.
