"Bad and Good from one hospital"

About: Southampton City PCT / District nursing Southampton General Hospital

(as the patient),

In early 2007 I was found to have a cancerous polyp in my colon. I was advised to have it removed. In March I went in to have the operation. It was a Friday. After the op I went into a ward. All was well until the Sunday when I became very ill with a pulse rate over 200. I was the centre of attention of the doctors and nurses all night. I was moved to a HDU in the morning where I remained very ill. I had contracted MRSA. I then became even more sick and it was C.Diff. The Doctor in charge of the HDU said to my surgeon that I could not stay in the HDU with C.diff I could only stay if I had MRSA. I then heard them say that I had both. I was looked after by the staff of the HDU very well. They cleaned me and the bed very frequently both day and night. I then collected pleuresy and had one and a half litres of fluid drained from one side. I was in the HDU for nearly a month. Because of these problems my wound had opened up so it was six inches high and four inches wide in the shape of a diamond.

I was allowed home in early April. The district nurses then looked after me until September when the wound had healed. It was the found that I had a large hernia in the area of the wound. I went in again and had this repaired by the same surgeon in October.

In conclusion I would like to make the following points. The surgeon was great, He looked after me in every way possible. The nursing staff were also wonderful. At the time I was 75 and not many people thought I would survive but the hospital staff did not give up. The downside of all this that I caught these bugs in the first place.
