"Glaucoma clinic outpatient examination"

About: Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

I'm 71 male with glaucoma. I have been living in rural Virginia in the United States for the past 10yrs and relocated to Norfolk in June 2014 so I have recent experience of the American health system and now again the NHS.

My exam at the Norwich Hospital Glaucoma Clinic in September 14 was very similar to my twice yearly exams in the US in terms of waiting times, procedures, quality of service and surroundings. I was entirely satisfied with my exam experience at Norwich and the clinical advice. And no co-pay charges or insurance premiums to pay. The one advantage of the US system is that a patient can see any consultant directly without the need to be referred by your family physician or GP, which speeds up the process but also I suspect leads to more unnecessary procedures, since most consultants are per procedure.

One thing I would like to improve would be turning down the heating and allowing more fresh air.

When the NHS receives so much adverse criticism I'm pleased to report my happy and satisfactory experience.

We are pleased that the care you received at our hospital compares well to the treatment you received in the USA. Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience and we will pass on your comments to the Matron for the eye clinic.
