"Dialysis at Monklands"

About: University Hospital Monklands

(as the patient),

I recently wrote a story about my care within the dialysis unit at monklands hospital. which I may say has been satisfactory however, I would like to raise a couple of issues which I feel need addresses.

1 patient transport which at the moment is being assessed is extremely poor with some patients waiting 30 mins +after treatment to be taken home followed by a journey time in excess of a further 30mins. some in ambulance cars and others on there own into a taxi, something not right here.

2 the provision of refreshments to dialysis patients is frankly a disgrace in comparison to some other hospitals, a patient refreshment consists of tea/coffee and a miserable choice of badly made sandwiches however if you are in luck you may get a roll, the contents of the sandwiches/rolls is the same day in day out cheese, egg, corn beef or maybe just maybe you will get a salad mayo roll but dont hold your breath I feel it is time the person or persons responsible be taken to task for these cost cutting tactics and their lack of care for patients.

Dear Bit519

Thank you for taking the time to make a further posting regarding your experiences within the Renal Dialysis Unit at Monklands Hospital.

You have highlighted the transport review which is ongoing and hopefully will address the concerns you raise.

I am sorry to hear that our provision of refreshments does not compare favourably with other boards, I am aware the SCN does have a service user group and I'm sure your input would be very welcome. If you would like to contact either the SCN of the Renal Unit or myself on 01236 713003.

Kind regards

Ruth

Update posted by Bit519 (the patient)

Things have not improved. The standard of the staff is excellent however, there it ends. The patient transport is a disgrace with some patients being crammed in a car with journey times being up to an hour or more, while others arrive in a new jaguar xf provided by a local taxi firm. The provision of refreshments to dialysis patients helps to break up the monotony of being tied to a machine for up to 5 hours at a time. The problem is they are awful, the same dry half defrosted sandwiches every day, no variety whatsoever, cheese slices, chicken bits, egg, mostly that is your lot. not a digestive biscuit, or even a miserable cream cracker in site. In comparison to other hospitals I have been in Monklands falls short in many aspects of patient care. Time to pull the socks up. points 4/10.

Dear Bit519

I am sorry to learn you did not find my first response helpful and that you remain dissatisfied with the transport arrangements and the provision of snacks during dialysis.

It would be very helpful if you would contact our Patient Affairs Manager on 01236 713065 to discuss your concerns more fully and to help us address these.

Kind regards

Ruth
