"Patient experience from admittance to disccharge"

About: Royal Oldham Hospital

I was admitted to hospital with a dislocated and fractured ankle on 1st September 2014 and the following is an account of my experience The ambulance arrived within less than 10 minutes and the crew were excellent - they made my transfer as pain free as possible, were reassuring and informative whilst also being kind friendly. Triage seemed to take just seconds and within no time I was seen by the majors team who very quickly repositioned and plastered my ankle again giving me pain relief - throughout the whole process doctors and medical staff explained the procedures and possible after effects in easily understood terms but also with a little banter to lighten the proceedings X-rays were taken again by staff who explained and helped me to the right position again with friendly conversation After a short wait of about half an hour I was taken on a trolley to T7 by a porter who expertly showed me how to use the crutches when I needed the toilet The ward staff were very welcoming and, realising that I had not eaten for quite some time went away to find me a sandwich and a cup of tea. Two doctors came to see me that evening explaining in detail how I would be operated on the following day and the ward staff gave me injections and pain relief at the prescribed times. They insisted that I press the bell for any assistance to the toilet and during the night when I couldn't sleep, brought cups of tea and reassurance The consultant and the anaesthetist visited early morning to go through the procedures again and at no time did I feel anyone was patronising or unhelpful - making sure that I understood everything and the implications of surgery. My operation took place that day and again from the staff who prepared me , preserving my dignity and treating me so courteously, to the porters and pre - med staff (don't remember much else) the whole operation was seamless. My aftercare was superb, including physio visits and stairs tests and I was discharged the following day with clear simple instructive leaflets and useful telephone numbers. Apart from maternity this was my first experience of a hospital stay and whist appreciating that things do sometimes go wrong, every department I encountered displayed the same professionalism and positive attitude towards me as a patient.. The care and treatment I was given was absolutely excellent and staff should feel very proud of the service they are delivering to the people of Oldham The review submission box 4 only allows the choice of one department when my comments relate to several the star system did not allow for n/k answers e.g. I could not comment about same sex wards as I was in a single room and had no knowledge of the other ward areas The only criticism I have is that strangely the shower and toilet area of the room was not disabled friendly and necessitated my having to ask staff for assistance (which they did gladly) @
