"Buckinghamshire Neurological Rehabilitation Unit"

About: Amersham Hospital

On the 3rd January 2014 I suffered a fairly major stroke which affected the right side of my body. I lost the use of my leg, arm and even had had difficulty sitting up straight because of damage to my abdominal muscles. Initial emergency treatment at Stoke Mandeville hospital and was transferred to Wycombe Stroke ward where I experienced excellent nursing and physiotherapy. The physios enabled me to, sit, stand and take a few tentative steps with support, they also gave me the belief that I could with effort from both sides recover. I was told on the 18th January that I was being transferred to the Buckinghamshire Neurological Rehabilitation Unit (BNRU), I was informed that this would greatly boost my recovery. After a weekend to settle in and meet the nursing staff led by the lovely and supportive Angie, I was introduced to the physios and OT who mapped out my timetable. From day I improved improved daily, I found that my rehabilitation was carefully considered, objectives were set and regularly assessed. The facilities were good and the gym well equipped, it was very conducive to the recovery. In addition to this support I also had a personal manager who looked to my needs and arranged case conferences which I could attend with my wife. Prior to release home on the 3rd march I had a home visit with the Occupational therapists to asses for any equipment I may need. During my stay I had wonderful support from all staff, when I left I was able to walk one mile with a stick and my arm and hand dexterity was very much improved. I have since being released just completed my 6 week home Physio / OT and again going from strength to strength. I will never ever forget the help and guidance I had, the BNRU is a real success story and if you do have a stroke pray you live in Bucks! David Jackson. Chesham
