Dr came round to patient's bed with a nurse and another doctor in tow. Dr said it would be highly beneficial for patient to be got out of bed and sat up and explained why. It appeared to be agreed by all present that that was going to happen. However the moment the Doctor was out of earshot all nursing staff present agreed amongst themselves that because Paul had a chest drain in they couldn't move him although they had mysteriously failed to mention this when the Dr was present. Presumably a respiratory specialist would be aware of the chest drain and was in fact trying to improve its operation. Discovered that out of hours Lymington Hospital's telephones don't have a duty manager option and the person in charge of nursing is too busy with her own drugs round to sort out the problem. Past experience tells me that their is always a drugs round, meal time, handover, difficult patient, inadequate night staff quota or some other excuse to justify inadequate services in the NHS. I have asked to speak to the Dr to make her aware that her instructions are not being carried out but I doubt that will happen.
