"Illogical and inefficient"

About: Purley War Memorial Hospital

My husband was seen by a nurse then a doctor there in February and then xrayed, and confirmed dislocated joint in shoulder, referred on to specialist in Mayday. This service worked well at that time. This month I brought my friend who had hurt her ankle. The nurse at the Walk-in Clinic checked her and told her it could be broken and she needed an xray, so should go to Mayday. We asked if it could be xrayed there at Purley, as the xray room is visible right along the corridor from the waiting room for the walk-in clinic. We were told that the xray service is not connected to the walk-in clinic and you can only get an xray via a request from the GP. I went along to the xray department and the staff there informed me that this was the first day of the new separated setup and they now had very few xrays to do, and were clearly frustrated with this. They confirmed that an xray is possible only with an order from a GP. We phoned my friends GP who agreed to send an xray request, and the xray was done. We went back to the walk-in clinic along the corridor from the xray area, and were told that they could not access the patient record to check the xray, so it would still be necessary to go to Mayday, or see the GP. By this time the GP surgery was closed. My friend went to see her GP the following day and was then sent to Mayday A+E. This was a very frustrating experience for us and it is very disappointing to see this fragmenting of services that should be joined up. Whoever made the decision to put these arrangements in place does not seem to be looking at the best way to serve the local population.
