"No Care"

About: Wexham Park Hospital

My mother was in AMU with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease as she had contracted pneumonia, she also has short term memory loss. My mother had a drip in place which was not working, when I told staff they argued that it was, when I was insistent they had a look and after two nurses attempts at flushing the can ulnar got it working again,nMynmothersntablets were left on the table and had not been given and the food which was in edible anyway was out of reach! I could never find any doctors to speak with and the nurses work at a snails pace and spend a good deal of time chatting amongst themselves and not attending to their patients. My mother ws moved to ward 9, where again they failed to take on board the fact that my mother was not eating and hardly drinking, the only time she got anything was when I gave her sips of drinks and tried to get her to eat a little but she would only have soup or yoghurt etc. I was not happy with the doctor I spoke to, as when I asked him if my mother was now clear of infection he kept evading my question until I insisted he answer my question, he then admitted that she was not clear of infection but that although she was no longer on antibiotics that they would carry on working?.. My mother was then send to Snowdrop ward which is a discharge ward, again they failed to notice thatbmynmither was still not eating and worst of all not drinking and becoming severely dehydrated! When my mother was given a nebuliser the nurse aphad not put it together properly and I had to point out to her that it was not working and get her to re do it! I was called to the hospital as my mother would not keep her oxygen on and was in a distressed stae. When I arrived my mother was delirious upside down on the bed and in a terrible state. She was burning up with fever and dehydration. I asked for a doctor but was told there were only two on the whole hospital!, I kept insisting that the doctor come and the nurse phoned the hospital manager, after over an hour a junior doctor arrived, prior to this I asked the nurse to take my mothers temperature as it was blatantly obvious that she had a fever, I had to insist o them doing this as my request was met with apathy, I also pulled my mothers skin which did not snap back due to the stent of her dehydration. I managed to get my Mum the right way up in the bed and managed after a good deal of time to get some oxygen into her withe the nose tubes, this got some much needed oxygen to her brain and made her slightly less anxious. I explained the dire situation to the doctor and said that if some actions were not taken that my mother would go into a coma. It took the doctor three attempts to get a line into my mother as she was so very dehydrated. I asked that she be moved to AMU so that she would get better treatment as on Snowdrop ward at times there weren't even nurses, one day when I was there my mother was calling out saying she couldn't breath, she hadn't been given her nebuliser!

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback regarding your mother's care at Wexham Park Hospital. Firstly I would like to apologise for this experience for both you and your mother. I would like this to be investigated urgently and in order to do this I need your mother's details. Please can you contact our Patient Advice and Liaison team (PALS) on pals@hwph-tr.nhs.uk or 01753 633365 as soon as possible. I have already forwarded your comments onto the Angela Ballard, Associate Director of Nursing for Medicine and Michelle Youens, her Deputy who would like to speak with you after you have contacted PALS.
