I recently visited the oral and Maxillofacial department to have a wisdom tooth taken out. I had the first appointment where an x-ray was taken, and I was advised as my tooth was in an awkward position I could choose to either have it out under local or general anesthetic, and having never been under general before and being slightly nervous of it I opted to be brave and go for local! I was obviously slightly nervous when I went for the procedure, but the dentist/surgeon that I saw (and the junior doctor that sat in on the procedure) was wonderful and put me at ease immediately. The dentist/surgeon constantly reassured me throughout and I only felt very minimal pain/pressure. I was given 10-15 minutes to recover whilst the very friendly and pleasant nurse gave me advice on aftercare. Unfortunately I have had a few problems since then with 'dry socket', and the area not healing very well (I had to have my gum cut and some bone removed), but both times I have been back to have this checked the doctors have been really kind and reassuring (the doctor on my last visit was slightly more abrupt, but still perfectly pleasant). I am still in quite abit of pain, but I am confident that I can return to the hospital if things do not improve over the coming days. I should also point out that I was never kept waiting any longer than 10 minutes for appointments, and the 2 times I visited without an appt due to the pain I was seen within 5 minutes of arrival. I just wanted to thank the doctors and nurses I encountered for making an unpleasant experience as nice as it could be! They are a credit to the hospital.
