I visited the continence nurse at Flatts Walk Health Centre in Whitehaven on the recommendation of my GP. Hoping for help with a very embarrassing subject, stress incontinence. I realised I was not alone, leaflets and posters in the waiting room made realise that. I was very apprehensive on my first visit. However, the nurse was very friendly but at the same time very professional. She explained what she was there to do, basically to help me overcome the problem. She asked me loads of questions all of which more easy to answer and I felt at ease straight away. She also did a bladder scan and tested my urine. At no time was it necessary for me to get undressed which was very re-assuring. It was good to go with a list of previous surgery and medical problems, as dates are not always easy to remember as well as a list of medicines I am on. The nurse told me why she thought I had this problem and suggested simple exercises which I was frequently told to do during the day. I was advised not to get constipated and she gave me sheets of paper with all the exercises to do. I was told to call her at any time with any problems. Otherwise I was to see her again on the 03/12/09. The room we were in was very private and the door was locked so no one could walk in. My condition has now much improved. Many thanks!
