"Care for my 95 year old mother in law"

About: Cognition and mental health in aging Kingston upon Thames / Kingston upon Thames Social Services

(as a relative),

My mother in law is not the easiest person to help, as she often rebuffs help offered. However, thanks to Nic, Social Worker Kingston CMHT for Older People at Tolworth Hospital in Kingston on Thames, Surrey, her last weeks were made a great deal better than they would have been had he not been involved.

Nic not only supported her throughout the years he was her social worker, but he also assisted the family. He ensured that his client's views were 'heard', spent countless hours 'above the call of duty' to ensure she had a voice and was an active participant in the care arranged for her. Nic also set up network meetings as well as practical care for her and when she was admitted to hospital, where she later died, visited her there as his way of ensuring ongoing support. I would, therefore, like to thank Nic for his holistic approach to her care.

Dear Mave91

Thank you very much for taking the time to write about the care your mother in law received from Kingston CMHT for older people and in particular the support she received from Nic the social worker right up until her death. It is very encouraging for staff to get positive feedback when they are getting it 'right' - as well as to always hear when we need to make improvements. I appreciate you taking the time to write to us now that your family member has sadly passed away.

This Kingston older people's CMHT is run as partnership between the South West London and St George's mental health NHS Trust and the Royal Borough of Kingston social services. By working together across agencies we aim to provide really well coordinated and, as you say, 'holistic' care. It is very good to hear that your mother in law and your family really benefited from this approach over a long period. We know that continuity of support and staff getting to know people well over time is often really important.

With very best wishes to you and your family

Ruth Allen
