"Removal of stitches - hospital or clinic?"

About: Tameside General Hospital / General surgery

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

This story has been posted by Healthwatch Tameside on behalf of a member of the public. We have their details and will forward any comments to them, as they do not have an email address. They said…

This lady had stitches that needed to be removed. She was sent an appointment to return to Tameside General Hospital to have the stitches removed. Travelling to Tameside Hospital costs her £12. 00 in taxi fares as she has no other way of getting to the hospital.

She wants to know why stitches can’t be removed in local clinics, which in this case would have been Dukinfield? She would still have needed a taxi to get to the appointment, but the distance would have been shorter, therefore the cost would be less.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments without specific details it is really difficult to comment on this situation.

Patients needing sutures removed is dependent on the individuals care although we acknowledge the inconvenience of traveling to the hospital to have this procure performed.

Many thanks

John Goodenough

Director of Nursing
