"Birth"

About: Leicester General Hospital

I had my baby few days prior to Christmas in 2012 and although I was early hours of the morning and walking in pain reached the door closest to the entrance of maternity unit to see it was shut so walked further to the other door and no one seemed to open the door for several minutes and was basically in pain walking up and down two doors along the that didn't seem to want to let anyone in! Finally someone opened the door and not sure if they told us to wait further ( by now I was having stronger contractions ) and so my husband rang the buzzer again and they staff took forever and let us in hesitantly , and finally after what seemed like forever we walked through nurses rooms and was told by midwife we should not have through that way! No one would open the main door and a midwife finally let us in and we still had to be told so why do they shut the main doors for in the first place ?! Anyhow I was told to sit in the waiting room for atleast half an hour and I was in agony by this time and was just hoping I was dilated enough to stay in hospital , when checked I was 4cms and was taken then into birth room . I had wanted epidural or some more pain relief but by 8am apparently I couldn't be given as as I was 8cm dilated . The midwife was nice early morning one and the midwife who delivered my baby too but I was rather tired and the pain had made it worse for me as I was using gas and air but that too I didn't get in with so much. After birth when I was given my own room as expected I was tired from the day before as I had signs of baby coming but my contractions didn't fully start till 9pm the previous day and had stayed up that whole morning till birth and after birth so by now I had not slept for almost 24 hours . I was zombified . And hospital doesn't allow anyone to stay over so there was a zombified me with my new baby who kept needing a change of clothes through the night as she kept throwing up meconium. When I rang the buzzers for nurses help one nurse came up and her response was " u buzzed ?" In such a lazy fed up tone I felt like she was either over worked or didn't seen to want to help! I was left all night in that condition changing clothes for my newborn till morning when I needed sleep and I wasn't able to catch much sleep as got woken by 6for blood test and midwives and other women from diff departments would come in for talks and though all I needed was sleep! Later the cleaners came round and because no one helped me all night to even look after me and my newborn the few pairs of clothes that I had literally only managed to half put on my baby when she threw up were just on the floor and a cleaner came and told me off and told me to clear up before the sweepers came ! So I hadn't slept in 24 hours gave birth in that time stayed up all night changing my newborns clothes lucky I was well prepared and bought many pairs of clothes and on top of it was being told to clean the room before cleaners came !

Dear Reviewer We have changed the admission procedure at the General following a lot of building work funded by the Trust and we have designated area called Maternity Admissions Unit. Since Dec 2013 we have a ward clerk who is working in Maternity Assessment until midnight after that time she is available to work on reception so admissions in the night when the door is locked are let in by a ward clerk. The main door is locked for the safety of the patients and staff. As we now have a maternity admissions unit all women are seen within 30 minutes of admission. If a woman gives a clear history of labour or if she appears to be in labour on arrival she is admitted straight to the Birth Centre which opened June 2013. I apologise for the lack of help that was received on Ward 30, since Jan 2013 we have recruited 7 more maternity care assistants and a housekeeper. These support staff are aware that their job is to help and assist women on the ward. The cleaners are now employed by Interserve and are they are very friendly helpful members of staff. I will re-iterate to them to be sensitive to women’s needs and obtain more help for the woman if her bed space needs clearing. Please feel free to contact me via e-mail or phone 07717 694404 if you require any further information. Joan Morrissey Senior Midwife Leicester General
