"Tooth Extraction - Day Surgery - General..."

About: Blackpool Victoria Hospital

In March 2014 I was referred by my dentist in order to have an infected tooth extracted. Being an extremely nervous dental patient I would need to be sedated in order to have this done. I was referred to Maxillofacial at Blackpool Victoria Hospital and was scheduled for day surgery on 30th Aug (yesterday). I was extremely anxious as it had been recommended that I have local anaesthetic and IV sedation but never having had IV sedation I was venturing into the unknown. I was seen by a Staff Nurse who said that the nurse would be looking after me while I was there. My blood pressure was taken and medical history checked. I then saw the surgeon who would be carrying out my tooth extraction, sadly I don't recall the surgeon's name. The surgeon confirmed which tooth needed to be removed, checked through all of my details and when I explained how nervous I was feeling recommended that I should have a general anaesthetic instead but the surgeon confirmed that the anaesthetist would see me first in order to discuss this. The anaesthetist was a consultant anaesthetist and I would like to thank the anaesthetist in particular for putting me at great ease at what was an anxious time for me. The anaesthetist really brightened my day and made me feel so comfortable, and knew how nervous I was but as soon as I walked into the anaesthetic room I was immediately put at ease. The surgery was over with very quickly and I came round in recovery before being taken to a bed to fully recover. I was offered some water and then some cordial as my mouth was very dry. After having my blood pressure and oxygen levels checked I was able to get dressed and be taken home within an hour of coming back from surgery. I was given the appropriate care information to take home and now only 24 hours after the surgery I feel great. Should I ever need to go back to BVH for day surgery I will be a lot more relaxed as I know what to expect. They have a great team there and I particularly want to thank the Staff Nurse, the anaesthetist and my surgeon for looking after me so well. Thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback on your recent visit to our Maxillofacial department at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

I am so pleased to hear that at such an anxious time for you the staff put you at ease and your procedure was performed problem free. I will be sharing your kind comments with the teams involved in your care and treatment.

Your comments will also be very reassuring to other patients attending for similar procedures.

Best wishes for the future,

Paul Jebb
