"Excellent care for 10 day old"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital / Paediatrics Sunderland Royal Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

When my son was unwell at 10 days old my midwife arranged for him to be seen by the on call paediatrician. I had to attend at a&e first, however, once we had been triaged, we were escorted straight across to Ward 20 where we were given a cubicle.

My son received excellent care there before he had to be transferred to another hospital as his admission was likely to be longer than 24 hours. This is the only negative in my experience.

We transferred to Sunderland Royal, Ward F65. As I am a breastfeeding mother I was regularly provided with food and drink (except when I was given a voucher for a free meal and dessert in the hospital canteen) in order to keep up my milk supply and a breast pump was also supplied for me to express for my son's feeds as he required Nasogastric feeding.

I was able to stay in hospital with my son at all times, even when he was moved to High Dependency Unit overnight and I was kept well informed of the differential diagnosis and treatment plan at all times. Once the results on his lumbar puncture came back it was found that he had neonatal meningitis. I can't thank the staff enough for everything they did for my son.
