"admission to ssip"

About: John Radcliffe Hospital

Seen by Consultant very promptly for dog bite. told I would be admitted for surgery on 21.08.2014 at 10:30am. assessed and confirmed I needed surgery. Junior Dr attempted to fit cannula in right hand but failed miserably his words were that didn't go well will and promptly left the room. few minutes later a Registrar entered room and fitted cannula in same hand - very painful experience. This was fitted for intravenpus antibiotics as risk of infection from dog bit Spent all day in day room with very little information on my care. Eventually taken to the ward about 8pm still not knowing if surgery would take place that day. 11:30pm surgeon came to see me and advised surgery would not take place due to emergency being admitted which I fully understood. Administration of iv was extremely painful due to position of canula fitted. Eventually following day a drip was set up for administration of antibiotics. Only the one time I hasten to add! I refused the folliw up. Medication as it was just too painful. Nurse removed this and and inserted in left hand. No problem no pain and very well inserted. overall the experince in this ward was absolutely awful. no communication. No one checked on you for pain relief no communication on timescale of surgery. No one csme to check out wound. eventually went down for surgery on hand 22.08.2014 at 9:30am. surgeon absolutely fantastic. Explained procedure. Care and communication 1st class. told I would be staying extra night as infection has occurred in bite. went back to ward. Pain relief offered until 6pm. No one checked or looked at wound until discharge was agreed on 23.08.2014 at 10am. Canula was still intact until I mentioned this to a nurse at 12:30pm when I was given discharge papers. communication and decisions really need to be addressed. I know its only a day short term ward but being informed etc is absolutely essentional in my view. the care etc is a shambles I hope this review is noted
