"Appauling service"

About: Leicester Royal Infirmary

I was sent to the A&E department at 9pm with a suspected DVT in my leg, after sitting there for 4 hours they took bloods and sent me home saying they doubted anything was wrong with me but to return for a scan the next day. When I went for a scan in the DVT clinic the next day, they sent me home as "no appointment was available for a scan" and said I had to return tomorrow giving me heparin to inject "just in case it was a blood clot". I returned the following day for a scan and I did have a blood clot in my knee - this is a life threatening illness !! this service was useless and dangerous. I will go to Kettering next time.

Dear reviewer, I’m very sorry to read about your experience of our service. I would like to reassure you that from the description of your experience below, you did receive the correct treatment from our Emergency Department (ED) as DVT is routinely treated in outpatient clinics across the UK, rather than within ED itself. The DVT service at Leicester Royal Infirmary is allocated 16 scan slots a day from Monday to Friday, however, we often get between 20 and 30 new referrals per day. The DVT clinic is moving towards 7 day working so we can offer more scans in order to address this issue, and we hope that the plans for the new Emergency Floor which are currently underway will also give us more space, time and resources to fulfil more referrals. I will share your comments below with our A&E management team, so we can use this to improve our service and relationships across the different teams at our hospitals to provide better care for our patients. If you have any further issues or concerns, please feel free to contact a member of our Patient Information and Liaison Service https://www.leicestershospitals.nhs.uk/patients/patient-welfare/patient-information-and-liaison-service/contact-form/ Kind regards Jude Dent Matron, Acute Medicine Leicester’s Hospitals
