"Disappointed by the paediatric ward GP. Patronised..."

About: Calderdale Royal Hospital

I visited my GP as I was concerned for the health of my 7 month old baby who had fever and coughed for two nights. My GP was concerned so referred me to the Calderdale paediatric ward. My GP had called ahead to book me in and sent a letter to explain the concerns. We were admitted and a nurse came over who carried out some tests. After an hour, I was seen by consultant. After conducting a very brief examination, the consultant turned to me saying that this ward is for seriously ill patients and that a hospital is not a good place to bring babies, as it has some severe diseases!!! I couldn't believe what I was being told. I repeatedly replied that I'm only here at the advice of my GP. The consultant carried on to say that my child looked healthy and happy and asked me if that is a picture of a sick baby? I left, feeling ridiculed and chastised for worrying for the well being of my baby. I informed my GP of that, they were shocked. Discharge notice from the hospital came ten days later, after no doubt I told my GP that, despite being promised one from the consultant at the hospital, I never received it. Let me point out that I have been very pleased with the admin/reception and nursing staff at the hospital. The consultants though have been all useless. I gave birth at the same hospital and a consultant that visited me was remarkably rude, pretending not to understand what I was saying.

We are really sorry to hear of your very disappointing experience of our consultants, this is obviously not the sort of treatment we expect for our patients. It is quite understandable you would worry about your baby who hopefully is now fully recovered. We would welcome the opportunity to investigate the concerns your raise, but are unable to do so from the limited information available on this site. If you would like us to look into these issues on your behalf, we would be grateful if you could contact our Patient Advice and Complaints service on 0800 013 0018, or 01484 342825, or by email to patientadvice@cht.nhs.uk, where our staff will be pleased to take the details. Many thanks for taking the time to report these issues, we are of course pleased to hear there were no issues with the admin, reception and nursing staff.
