"My son was supposed to be under the care of this hospital"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital / Neurology

(as a relative),

I took my son to A&E a week ago Tuesday, with excruciating head pains. He couldn’t barely move, couldn’t look at lights or TV. We waited 3 hrs to be seen, just for him to be told he had bad sinuses and they gave him antibiotics. The next day, he was even worse. He was vomiting and couldn’t keep any water or tablets down, and the headache was even worse, if that was possible. So my daughter took him back to A&E again, where a Dr said he should have had a brain scan the night before and blood tests. So they kept him in, gave him a brain scan and did blood tests. They came back normal, but he was still in severe pain from his head, so they gave him a lumbar puncture and sent him home AGAIN still in severe pain. On arrival home after 15 mins, the hospital phoned to tell us he had viral meningitis, so our GP told us to go back to the same ward, the Selly Oak Admissions ward. When we got there they had no knowledge of us going back, so we had to sit for another 3 hrs to wait to be seen again, still with my son in severe pain and vomiting. They eventually got him a bed on another ward

And would you believe it they sent him home the next day again, this was Friday. By Sunday morning I had to call an ambulance for him, as he was so violently sick and in pain that he couldn’t even get out of bed or stand up with the pain.

Once again he was admitted then transferred to another hospital in the middle of the night, due to bed crisis. So they basically did nothing again, apart from put him on a drip, cause he was so dehydrated and sent him home again. He is now in his own bed and if I have to take him back in again because he is in anymore pain, I will not be responsible for what I will do the next time I have to sit there for another 4 hrs and go over it all again. None of these Drs seem to communicate with one another at all. I’m just preying to god this WAS the last time.

Thank you for taking the time to talk about your experiences. I am sorry to hear that you have had such a difficult time. I would like to recommend that you contact your local NHS Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) for more guidance and help. They can be contacted on 0121 627 8820 or by email. They should be able to help, if you need any further support.
