My son is 18 and has cystic fibrosis, insulin dependent diabetes and DIOS (intestinal obstruction syndrome) - I heard him shouting at 9am on Sunday morning but had earlier heard a thump (1am) then shouting at 6am but as we have really noisy neighbours thought it was them! My son was cold, had huge pupils but could speak (just) - he had fallen out of bed and had chest and leg pain and could not get up.
I rang 999 and spoke to Ben - he was very calm and reassuring and talked me through lots of questions until 2 paramedics arrived - they worked quickly and efficiently. My son is on the 3rd floor of our Victorian house and so they had quite a few trips up and down - one staying with him at all times. They established that low blood sugar (Hypo I think) had led him to (probably) have a fit (hypo) and fall out of bed. I had already taken his blood glucose reading (2. 2 - very low) and given him OJ & glucogel under the guidance of Ben (999 advisor). The paramedics did lots of checks and reassured us that my son was on the mend, but left us with advice on what to do if we were at all worried throughout the day - including call them back. They also lifted my son back into bed, then lifted him into a comfortable position so he could have a cup of tea and eat something. In this day and age of health and safety madness it is very reassuring that ambulance service LIFT patients for their comfort and safety.
Thank you SO much to Ben and the 2 responders - thank you!
"Fantastic paramedic response to 999 call out"
