"Poor care at Maternity Unit - Queen Elizabeth Hospital Woolwich"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

When our first child was due we went to QE at 11pm and were turned away because I wasn't dilated enough. After two more visits I was admitted at 4am, the distracted midwife was floating around and would occasionally pop in to ask if everything was OK, the staff didn't inspire confidence or show any particular interest. Both being new parents we did not know what to expect or look out for or even what we should be asking, when the midwife finally came in at around 8: 10 am our baby was already crowning and we were in a state of panic because it was just the two of us in the room. After the baby was born we were left alone in the room for some time, after two hours my husband had to change the sheets on the bed as I had been laying in the afterbirth and it was getting very uncomfortable.

Basically, the care is poor, the aftercare is even worse - We were fortunate, our child was born fit and healthy, I dread to think what would have happened if there had been complications.

I was really disappointed to read your experience of your maternity care, this is not the service that we would wish for anyone to receive. It is our aim to provide a high quality, safe service to all women choosing to have their babies at the Queen Elizabeth and I am truly sorry that this was not your experience. Helen Knower the Head of Midwifery would value being able to discuss your care further, her email address is helen.knower@nhs.net
