"Useful Hospice session on memories and skills"

About: John Eastwood Hospice (inpatient)

(as a staff member),

Very informative session on the different types of dementia. The analogy of the fairy lights depicting dementia deterioration was very useful in helping young people understand how memories and skills can be dimmed/lost over time. Symptoms progress at different rates.

Bookcase analogy, with the shelves getting shaken (memories), emotions (is the carcus) and remains much longer even if facts have disappeared from the shelves. Perception task with 6 volunteers was a great illustration of what different people are capable of - based on individual judgements. The young people responded very well to the information and activities. Thank you very much for your time and efforts in supporting our project.

Hello,

Thank you for your posting. I am really pleased that the dementia awareness session was of such benefit and provided insight for the teenagers in the group. Dementia impacts on many lives across generations and families, we aim to increase awareness of this illness.

I will share this with Steph, our education facillitator.

Many Thanks

Emma
