"Praise for City Asperger's Team"

About: Intellectual Developmental Disabilities /Learning Disability Services - Community / Intellectual Developmental Disabilities /Learning Disability Services – City

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

The following thank you letter was received from a former client of the Asperger Service:

I am writing to you today because it is exactly one year today since I received my diagnosis from you, and I would like to tell you what a difference the diagnosis has made to my life.

Now I have a name for the things that make me different. I see I'm not so unuusal at all when looked at as a person with Asperger's. This has given me a lot of confidence to be exactly who I am and not a socially modified version. In turn I have faced which friends, places and experiences are healthy and fulfilling in every sense of the word.

I found an excellent booked agimed at children but very good for both explaining Asperger's to friends and for reaffirming a sense of self - it is 'Inside Asperger's Looking Out' by Kathy Hoopmann.

I have moved house to live inthe same village as my family and by being just myself I have gained new neighbours who are accepting of my 'little oddities', such as toting a teddy bear around!

Since 'allowing' myself to have needs and limitations, as well as strengths, my mental health has improved to the point of discharge from psychiatric services.

I have never felt so safe and complete in my adult life, and I thank you for the diagnosis that gave me the confidene to embrace and realise this version of myself.

Many thanks again for the big difference you have made.

At Nottingham City Asperger Service we appreciate feedback like this. We realise some people struggle around identity and living with a life long condition. The service user has embrased 'being different' as a result of having Asperger Syndrome and in turn her social world have accepted her for who she is too. It makes our world a better place to accept Autism spectrum conditions as another facet of our lives.
