"Triple Heart Bypass"

About: Blackpool Victoria Hospital Central Lancashire PCT / Community nursing Royal Preston Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I had a heart attack in August 2007 and I spent two weeks including four days in the ITC at Royal Preston Hospital after which I spent two weeks in Victoria Hospital, Blackpool having had a triple heart by pass. At Blackpool Victoria Hospital the food was always unappealing and could not match the excellence of eatery at the Royal Preston Hospital.

After discharge, I was visited every fortnight by a community matron which was helpful in my recuperation. Eventually the visits were reduced to once a month. I feel monthly visits are not really necessary and that a call for help would be better.

Dear Wooded360

I am sorry to hear that you experienced such a difference in the quality of the food during your recent stay in hospital. I will pass your comments to Blackpool Victoria Hospital so that they are aware of the comments you have made.

It is pleasing to hear that you found the Community Matron visits helpful when you were discharged home. It you feel that the monthly visits you currently receive are not necessary, you could discuss this with your Matron who is there to make sure that your views are heard.

I will ensure that the Community Matron manager is made aware of the comments to establish whether there is anything that the service can do to make things better in the future. A further more detailed posting will be made on the site within the next two weeks.

Dear Wooded360

I am pleased to hear you have found the Community Matron Service of help to support you when you were discharged from the hospital.

As you are aware the Community Matron Service aims to empower, encourage and educate people to self manage their own condition and to identify when they feel their condition is deteriorating to seek support ASAP to prevent unnecessary admission to hospital. The frequency of visits is determined on how you are making progress around managing your condition and your needs at that time. Anyone receiving the Community Matron Service is encouraged to make contact with the service if any concerns arise that you wish to discuss or to request an earlier contact by your Matron if your condition deteriorates.

Due to the nature of the variable conditions that patients receiving the service suffer from, it is not possible to provide an equitable service to all on the caseload. At times some people's need poses a higher risk of admission and as a result, the Matron needs to provide more support to those people at that time. If your situation were to change and your condition got worse, then you would be classed as high risk and should expect to receive the same level of care.

When you do contact the service it is helpful if you can be specific about what the problems are that you are experiencing at that time. This will enable the Matron to provide you with the most appropriate care.
