"Talking and getting it out is important, I now enjoy life more"

About: Inclusion Matters Wirral

(as a service user),

I have had counselling with three different councillors over the last five years. Two of which were short session over a period up to six weeks which was not long enough. I realised I had been sexually abused on my last session I had mentally blocked it and I was not given more sessions I felt like I was left hanging.

The most recent councillor Patsie has been the best at keeping me informed of the process and deciding together as to what we needed to focus on and how many sessions I felt I would need. She helped me to cope with what I have been through and made me realise I can be strong and have the right to feel the way I do.

I had a breakdown twice in my life and have experienced a series of extreme events I have encountered some very bad people. I think most people would be shocked at what I have been through. To talk and get it out is important to be listened to and my opinion valued is important. I have now the feeling of self worth I enjoy life more.

Before I wanted to give up and not live I blamed myself for what me and my family experienced. I tried to be too strong to deal and cope with everything I felt I had no choice. I now have support I make the people in my life listen when I cry for help. I express how I feel, most importantly I have removed the negative people from my life as they were getting me down.

The counselling should be offered sooner and longer sessions, people should be assessed individually not just told you only get 6 sessions as it puts pressure on the individual and is unproductive.
